Police are questioning the captain and crew-members of a fishing vessel following the sudden death at sea of one of the crew.
John Dowden, of Hogg Street, Albouystown, also known as ‘Nattie’, reportedly collapsed and died on Wednesday on the fishing vessel Miss Sassie, which was in the Waini area at the time.
A relative said that Dowden was about 50 years old and had fathered six children.
Chrishnadat Singh, the captain, told Kaieteur News that the vessel was in the Waini area at around 01:00 hrs on Tuesday when Dowden began to complain of stomach pains.
Singh said that he told the fisherman to “take a five,” and ‘Nattie’ then drank two painkillers and rested. The captain also noted that ‘Nattie’ also put on a jersey, which was unusual.
According to the captain, at around 22:00 hrs, the fisherman indicated that he was feeling better.
“On Wednesday, I ask him the same thing (how he felt) and he say that he better, and say he could work back,” Singh said. Kaieteur News was told that the men then set their seines.
According to the captain, Dowden then had a breakfast of bread and tea. He also smoked a cigarette, although the crew cautioned him against doing so because of his illness.
The captain said that shortly after, Dowden began clutching his stomach and complaining of pains.
“I say ‘hold strain’ and he go and sit at the back of the cabin. Then I see his head drop and his mouth open, and he (was) gone.”
Singh said that he eventually made radio contact and managed to inform the police about Dowden’s death.
Singh said that Dowden had been working with him for about 23 years.
The body was brought to shore at around 18:30 hrs yesterday at the Meadowbank wharf. Relatives, including one of the dead man’s sons, and several friends turned up after receiving the news.
While foul play is apparently not suspected, Kaieteur News was told that police have detained the captain and some of the crew.
The body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
