– UG student among five detained
Six people including a female student of the University of Guyana are in police custody following the discovery of about five kilograms of marijuana and a .357 magnum revolver with seven matching rounds during a raid on an Enterprise, East Coast Demerara house on Sunday.
The persons were detained after none of the occupants claimed ownership of the illegal items which were discovered during two raids on the property located at Section C, Enterprise.
This newspaper was told that around 18:30 hours, ranks from the Tactical Services Unit, East Coast Anti- Crime Patrol conducted a search of the house owned by a security guard attached to Guyana Elections Commission
At the time of the raid, it was being occupied by five tenants. During the search, the ranks found three carton boxes containing several parcels of marijuana weighing about 4.9 kilograms. They initially arrested two women who were in the house.
But while rechecking the seized marijuana, police discovered a firearm holster in one of the packages and became suspicious.
They were almost convinced that they had missed something big and so another set of ranks, this time from the Police ‘C’ Division, decided to return to the house to make further checks.
They found more drugs and sure as night turns to day, the ranks also discovered a .357 magnum with seven live rounds, stashed behind a door of the house.
This time a man was arrested. However those arrested claimed that they knew nothing about the items and suggested that it might belong to the owner of the house who had recently rented them the property.
The owner was also detained and is assisting with the investigations.
