Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo yesterday remanded 25-year-old Calvin James of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice on the charge of possession of 550 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
James was represented by attorney at law Charrandass Persaud and pleaded not guilty.
Police prosecutor Roberto Figueira told the court that on Monday, last, the police were on patrol when they spotted James in the vicinity of New Amsterdam market with a black bag on his back acting in a suspicious manner.
The prosecutor explained that the accused was preparing to enter a car when the lawmen apprehended him.
A search was carried out on James, while some of the police on the patrol followed the car that had been driven away after the driver had observed what was unfolding.
It was later found that the black bag the accused had in his possession contained leaves, stems and seeds suspected to be cannabis.
Nothing illegal was found on the occupants of the said vehicle which had driven away, so they were allowed to go.
According to Figueira, the content which was found in the black bag was tested and weighed and it was found to be 550 grams of cannabis. James was arrested and charged. The accused will make his next court appearance on November 26.
