Twenty two years ago, Danny Persaud was diagnosed as a diabetic. Since then he and his family have been scraping together the little financial resources to meet the financial demands of his treatment.
But today, they are down to the bare crumbs and it has now become almost impossible for them to keep up with the ever increasing cost of medical care for the Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara resident.
Persaud is now desperately in need of a kidney.
Although Persaud has been diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension several years ago, he was able to cope. He was still able to work and provide for his family and pay his medical bills.
However, four years ago his condition took a turn for the worse. Since then Persaud has been in and out of hospital.
In addition to the basic medical cost, Persaud and his family have been scraping together all their resources to meet the $45,000 cost for each of the twice weekly dialysis he requires.
“We always tried with the hospital bill but now we are actually drained of financial resources. How much more can you depend on family?” said his wife Amanda Persaud.
Persaud said that he would be extremely grateful should someone donate a kidney since he is convinced that he could still return to work to support his family.
Persaud also underwent surgery to repair two detached retinas.
This, he said, was made possible through the government which provided the financial resources.
But as long as he is without a kidney, Persaud and his family will continue to be hard pressed to keep up with the medical bills.
He is desperately appealing to organisations or individuals who, in any way, could assist him out of his present predicament.
Persaud can be contacted on telephone numbers 266-5183; 692-9188 or 674-2651.
