– released on $60,000 station bail
Attorney at law Adrian Thompson yesterday confirmed that his client, Osafo Johnson, had been released on $60,000 station bail, pending the outcome of the investigation. Johnson, 17, of 707 East Ruimveldt, was shot outside his front gate.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene stated that the teen had opened fire on the police and was fleeing from them when he was shot.
Thompson yesterday told this newspaper that Johnson was released from the Brickdam Police Station, some time on Sunday.
One relative who spoke to Kaieteur News yesterday said that Johnson has been taken to a private medical institution. On Friday last, the police promptly arrested Johnson minutes after doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital deemed him fit enough for discharge.
Relatives, up to Saturday, were still very adamant that Johnson had no previous criminal matters.
However, this newspaper understands that Johnson was recently charged with two counts of robbery under arms. The matter is currently being heard before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
Meanwhile, the Georgetown Hospital Corporation yesterday issued a strong statement denying claims made by Johnson’s relatives. Relatives of the teenager had alleged that Johnson was prematurely discharged from the hospital.
According to the statement, Johnson spent a total of five days in the institution, two of which were spent in the High Dependency unit.
It was further stated that as Johnson’s condition improved he was transferred to the Male Surgical Ward.
Hospital officials, according to the release, had explained to Johnson’s relatives that although the bullet was still lodged in him, his condition had improved.
The doctor who treated Johnson had also explained that the bullet is ‘incidental’ and can be removed at anytime, for it is not the bullet that is treated; the priority lies in treating the injury which is caused by the bullet.
Furthermore the hospital claims that Johnson was up and about in the Male Surgical Ward and had even requested to be discharged.
However, because of his condition Johnson was still being monitored and fluids were still being drained so he was not discharged.
Prior to his discharge, Johnson was being closely monitored, and was not receiving any oxygen, his blood pressure and blood count were both normal. His condition, according to the hospital, was listed as stable.
Almost two Sunday’s ago, the teen was shot by police who said that they were hunting for wanted man, “Cobra”. The police are now saying that Johnson opened fire at them and was trying to escape. According to the police, Johnson is wanted in connection with a murder and a series of armed robberies.
However, relatives vehemently denied that Johnson was part of a gang that is run by wanted man “Cobra”. They claim that Johnson is being targeted. The police had arrested him three days prior to the shooting. After spending 72 hours in police custody, they released him without any charge.
