The International Development Agencies (IDA’s) in Guyana have embarked on a new initiative, which entails a closer working relationship with the Guyanese people.
The International Development Agencies which comprise of the European Union (EU), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the UK Department for International Development [DFID], the Inter-American Development Bank [IDB], the United Nations [UN], the United States Agency for International Development [USAID], and the World Bank [WB] will come together with Members of Parliament, civil society, relevant stakeholders and the media to inform them about their activities in Guyana and in particular the ones for the current year 2010.
At a press conference, yesterday, at the UNDP office, United Nations Representative, Kiari Liman-Tinguiri, told members of the media that these agencies are set to launch several events in Guyana, which are intended to establish a productive dialogue with different stakeholders throughout Guyana.
“The most important objective is to make sure that the international development assistance will provide the maximum benefit possible to the countries that receive it. To do so, a number of principles have been set to be followed at country level while delivering aid,” Tinguiri said.
He explained that together with Government, Members of Parliament, civil society and other relevant stakeholders, the IDAs want to create a dialogue on the work being done in Guyana.
“This interaction and particularly the feedback from stakeholders we expect would enhance future programmes, making them better tailored to the needs of the country.”
He added that the outcomes of IDAs programmes in various thematic areas could be maximised.
The first event in the form of a New Year reception is set for the Georgetown Club on Tuesday January 26, from 6.00 PM. It is the intention of the IDAs to make it an annual initiative that would be complemented by regular follow-ups with stakeholders throughout the year.
Representative from the European Union (EU), Geert Heikens, explained that the main aim of the exercise is to make Guyanese much more aware of the work being done by the donor agencies in Guyana.
At this point in time, he does not feel that Guyanese are knowledgeable about what is exactly being done by the international agencies that are in the country.
“It seems to be, rather, that the government, government officials, the government partners and counterparts know very well what we are doing but a large part of the Guyanese are not well informed what their partners from abroad are doing for Guyana and for the welfare of the people,” Heikens noted.
In this regard, the representatives from the international agencies are hoping that the event will contribute to enhancing IDAs programmes in Guyana, as well as strengthening the openness, transparency and accountability with stakeholders.
BE THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL TO THE FOREIGN EXPLOITERS
