— Dr Ramsammy
Following reports of a mystery illness which reportedly claimed the lives of several persons, including a baby, in Region One, Barima/Waini, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has said that he is unaware of the situation.
Minister Ramsammy made this disclosure yesterday when contacted for a comment on the matter.
The mystery illness has so far only affected (as far as reports go) the rural area and not much is known of it.
The symptoms experienced by the victims were diarrhoea, vomiting and cramps lasting for a few days.
Kaieteur News understands that after the first cases were reported in the area, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, sent a team into the area.
In recent days at least three persons, including a baby, have fallen victim to the mysterious illness.
Minister Sukhai said that all the information gathered in the Barima/Waini area was transmitted to the Ministry of Health.
According to Minister Sukhai, her Ministry had adequately addressed the issue by sending in a health team, however, Dr. Ramsammy said that he is unaware of any such health team visiting the area.
Two of the victims were from Barama–a young baby and a man, Compton Tony. The other victim, John Charles, was from the Moruca area.
The residents are reportedly very worried, given that there seems to be no attempt by health officials to travel to the area to effectively ascertain the cause of the mystery illness.
