The 34th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference of the Caribbean Americas and the Atlantic Region will open in Guyana today at the National Cultural Centre.
Some 20 member-countries are expected to attend the conference.
The opening ceremony will seek to entertain and give, particularly the overseas participants, a glimpse of Guyana’s Cultural Art forms.
On Thursday, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said that Guyana will have a three-member team at the conference consisting of two Government representative and one from the opposition.
Delegates will be debating on socio-economic and political matters that threaten to hinder the region’s development.
The Cabinet Secretary stated that among the presentations that Guyana will be making at the conference will include the global financial crisis and climate change.
The global economic crisis and its consequences for the region, dealing with the social impact of economic crisis, environment and climate change, and challenges of public safety and security are on the conference’s agenda.
Secretary-General, Dr. William F. Shija, will be attending the conference.
The CPA consists of the national, provincial, state and territorial Parliaments and Legislatures of the countries of the Commonwealth, and has membership in 51 of the 52 Commonwealth member-states.
Among the countries that will attend the five day conference are Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica, Canada and Grenada.
