Twenty-five year-old DCC batsman Andrew Lyght Junior smashed 94 from 50 balls with 4 fours and 11 massive sixes as the Rest Team took first innings honours in their drawn 2-day practice match against the National U-19 team at the Police ground yesterday.
Lyght, the son of former Guyana and West Indies ‘B’ team opener Andrew Lyght clobbered anything remotely loose and was especially severe on left-arm pacer Andre Stoll whose 3 overs cost 41 runs and his pugnacious innings advertised his ability to consistently dispatch the balls with savagery and disdain. Yesterday his innings knew no dawn beginning instead at high noon.
Lyght has been residing and playing domestic cricket in Trinidad for the past 5 years but has now returned home to vie for a place on the Demerara and Guyana teams for the upcoming 20/20 and 50 overs competitions and his availability could be an asset to the national side for the 20/20 festival in Guyana in August.
Resuming on 90-3 in reply to the Rest Team’s 280, the National Under-19 side were dismissed for 191 with only left-hander Jeetendra Sookdeo, who hit 5 fours in 63 from 140 balls and 190 minutes and Vice-Captain Royston Alkins who’s 35 included 3 sixes, offered
resistance on a slow track and heavy outfield as standby left-arm spinner Anthony Adams took 5-34 from 12 overs for the Rest side.
Adams, although not a prodigious turner, got nice drift and staked a strong claim for inclusion in the 14-man touring squad to represent Guyana in this year’s regional youth series in Jamaica from July 9 if Rajendra Naikbarran is not passed fit to travel.
Led by the ‘Lyght show’ and his second half-century of the match from national all-rounder Christopher Barnwell, the Rest team fell for 254 in their second innings 35 minutes before the scheduled 17:00hrs close to give them a lead of 343.
The match was called off at that stage and the Guyana youth team had a 1-hour practice session.
Once overnight batsman Seon Hetmyer (19) was removed by standby leg-spinner Amir Khan at 92-4, none of the batsmen apart from Sookdeo, who was eventually stumped off Adams at 186-8 and Alkins who was sent packing by Khan at 154-5, offered resistance. Adams and Khan (3-66) who got plenty of turn and bounce, bowled in tandem to help conspire the demise of the lower order.
Anthony Bramble (11), Andrew Stoll (3) who showed little inclination to get behind pacer Keyron Fraser, Seon Daniels (0) and guest player Denis Legay (0) all fell in quick succession as the National Colts crashed from 154-4 to 191 all out. When the Rest team began their second innings, standby opener Ryan Rajmangal (3) was the silent partner in his 40-run stand with Lyght before Rajmangal missed a wild swipe to a full toss and was bowled by part time off-spinner Trevon Griffith. Alex Amsterdam (22) then tickled a leg-side catch to Bramble off Legay at 84-2 before Lyght attempted to reach his ton with a six but only succeeded in top-edging a catch off leg-spinner Jonathon Foo to square-leg where Bramble ran to take the catch at 142-3.
Skipper Steven Jacobs (7) used his feet to a flighted ball from Foo and was bowled at 155-4. Barnwell, who made 72 in the first innings, ran himself out as he attempted an impossible single. Totaram Bishun fielded well to his own bowling moving to his right to ensure the run out to leave the score on 215-5. His 56 lasted 42 balls and was decorated with 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Jamal Hinckson (10) and Khan, who looked good in his unbeaten 10, were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as Bishun finished with 3-54 and got good support from Foo (2-49) and off-spinner Royston Alkins (2-37). A final 3-day practice match is scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday when the players will break camp. The team departs for Jamaica on July 7.
