Two life-jackets believed to be those of the remaining missing fishermen were recovered yesterday.
The discovery was made by a search team that combed the mouth of the Pomeroon River, in the general location where the bodies of Ramlall and Basdeo Ramphal were found on Tuesday.
But the condition of the life-jackets has raised suspicions about how the fishermen met their deaths.
A post mortem examination performed by Dr. Nehaul Singh on the bodies of the two revealed that Ramlall Ramphal died by drowning while Basdeo Ramphal’s cause of death was undetermined.
From all indications the two life-jackets recovered yesterday were being worn by the boat’s captain Michael Ramlochan and 14-year-old Peter Torres, since both the Ramphals were wearing theirs when their bodies were discovered.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday after several hours of searching, Nalinie Singh wife of the boat’s captain said that one of the life-jackets recovered yesterday was cut into two pieces while the other bore a large cut.
She found it strange that the two pieces of the severed life jacket were found close to each other.
It was widely believed that the fishermen’s boat sank slowly some 15 miles off the Essequibo Coast and the men were forced to abandon it, but eventually perished.
The boat’s ice box was found last Thursday by another fishing crew off the coast and was brought ashore.
But Nalinie Singh is not convinced that that is what really happened.
“I believe that there may be some foul play. It’s funny how only the two cousins find, if they all jump together. They should be close by,” she told this newspaper.
The boat ‘Sir Kegan’ had left the Meadowbank Wharf last week Tuesday to return after two days at sea. However, after they did not return a search was launched with assistance from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
A tired Nalinie Singh said that she was grateful for the assistance provided by members of the Region Two Administration, who provided a boat and some fuel for the search yesterday.
“I was satisfied because I went myself and search. We stop and walk through all the mud to find the other two bodies. I looked at the bush and I feel in my heart that my husband is still alive,” she said.
But with the grueling search taking its toll, she may soon give up and return home to Unity, Mahaica, and hope for the best.
