A former corporal attached to the Guyana Defence Force has been committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown for rape. Winston Haynes, who was represented by Attorney Dexter Todd, is accused of raping a young woman in January at Army Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
When the matter came up yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman, she ruled that there was sufficient evidence against the accused for him to go on trial.
Haynes, who is out on $600,000 bail, will go before a judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
According to information, the young woman was allegedly raped by the former soldier in the presence of two of his colleagues, who have since been dismissed from the army. The Director of Public Prosecutions had recommended that only Haynes be charged, even though the two other persons were initially accused.
Based on reports, the young woman was dating Haynes and had gone to the army base to see him. It was also reported that while at the base, the young woman refused to have sex with him, since two of his colleagues were there. However, Haynes allegedly forced her into having intercourse as the others looked on. It was also reported that when the accused was finished, his two colleagues pulled and tugged at the woman as they attempted to force her to have sex with them. The woman was only allowed to leave after other army personnel at Camp Stephenson intervened.
