Dear Editor,
Recent news items include coverage of forever-leaders in unions and civic and political organizations. These forever-leaders must believe in the birthright claim. Each usually treats their position as an inheritance and without doubt these forever-leaders will have been registering very low in the attribute of personal growth.
Of course, these organizations often fall way short in fulfilling the expressed purpose for their existence. What a surprise! Organizational dry-rot sets in and what is accomplished is a pittance compared to what was possible with ‘State of the art Leadership’. No one person can maintain organizational growth and goal achievement for an unlimited number of years. Over time, usually both the forever-leader and the organization shrink and the gap widens between what is accomplished and what was possible. Members become restive and internal battles are waged. The situation does not get pretty from here.
To grow and fulfill the hopes, dreams and aspirations of any organization the first requirement is ‘inspired leadership’. This is true for a family, a club, a business, a political organization and certainly for a country. After all what is best for the organization should always be the designing purpose of decisions.
The focus here is on organizations like GPSU with leadership in place for decades. These organizations share a common outcome. They lack any significant tangible positive achievements that most members would agree on during their time in existence. Any leader who believes or exhibits the tendencies to signal that they know it all without input from others is in the same group of achievers as the ‘also-rans’. Organizational financial resources are directed to ineffective activities and the decline is inevitable.
True leaders would, therefore, be seeking to grow their organizations on these journeys and would find it impossible to also avoid personally growing. On this growth path the leader will recognize the potential in those around him or her and seek out ways to harness these nascent human resources. So, that, over time, the inspired leader will recognize that their task is really to develop the organization’s human resources and with good measure begin to see and fashion, not unaided, their replacement.
Not a birthright to stay on and on but rather to pass leadership on to another. An inspired leader will often find greater satisfaction and sense of achievement when the baton is passed. That a successor could be developed during your watch -the true feeling of a proud parent! Well, almost!
