…blames it on alcohol
A 22-year-old man from East Canje, Berbice, was ordered to pay a fine of $100,000 after admitting to snatching a quantity of gold jewellery from a bartender.
Uriel Amsterdam appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on March 17, at Second Avenue Bartica, he stole from the person of Farida Mohamed, a gold chain, a pair of earrings and nine finger rings all totaling $268,000.
Amsterdam told the Chief Magistrate that he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the offence. He apologized to the court and said that he and Mohamed were drinking on the day in question at a bar. He further stated that the woman took off the jewellery and left them on the counter and he picked them up and walked away.
Amsterdam confessed that he intended to sell the stolen items.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore said that Mohamed is a bartender and that Amsterdam was visiting the bar at the time. According to Prosecutor Moore, Amsterdam snatched the chain which was around the woman’s neck and made good his escape. The prosecutor explained that the rings and earrings were attached to the gold chain.
The matter was later reported to the Bartica Police Station and investigations were launched. Amsterdam was apprehended by police at Itaballi Landing while waiting to board transportation to Parika.
Prosecutor Moore stated that the gold chain, the pair of earrings and five finger rings were found in Amsterdam’s possession. He said that Mohamed identified the items as her belongings.
Failure to pay the fine will see Amsterdam spending eight months in jail.
