The administration of the Guyana Police Force is being asked to probe the prevalence
of theft of gasoline from its depots around the country.
Kaieteur News understands that the pilfering of gasoline is becoming increasingly widespread, as it is being perpetrated by both junior and senior ranks.
For expediency sake, the police force has established fuel depots at several of its locations to facilitate the fueling up of official police vehicles.
According to a senior police officer, the personal vehicles of ranks are prohibited from refueling at these depots.
However, within recent weeks, it was observed that ranks are circumventing the system and are illegally accessing fuel from these depots,
While some are being done clandestinely, others can be seen openly refueling their personal vehicles with fuel allocated to the Force.
The latest cases of pilfering have been occurring in Berbice at the Central Police Station, the headquarters of the Police B Division.
And according to a source, the perpetrators are mainly senior ranks.
“They would hang us if we are caught taking gasoline from the depot,” a junior rank told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News was told that the matter in Berbice was brought to the attention of the force’s administration before but nothing was done.
However, a senior police official informed that the practice of fueling up police vehicles at some police depots was discontinued because of pilfering by ranks.
In Georgetown, most police vehicles have to go to the Guyoil fuel station to refuel.
