The man who allegedly murdered nine-year-old South Ruimveldt resident Shaquan Gittens, was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court, when a preliminary inquiry concluded in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Ryan Bobb-Semple had been on remand since last April for the murder of the young boy.
It is alleged that between April 1 and April 4, 2015 at Houston Backlands, he murdered Gittens.
Gittens went missing on April 1, 2015 after he left home to go kite-flying in his neighbourhood with some friends. The partially decomposed and bloated body of Gittens was discovered in a trench three days after he went missing.
According to reports, Bobb-Semple saw the little boy walking at night on Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt. He reportedly admitted to police that he “tripped” the boy, causing him to fall to the ground before dragging him under a tree. It was under the tree, that Semple reportedly told police he tied Gittens’ hands and sodomized him.
It was also reported that the accused severed the child’s private part before dumping his body in a trench in the Houston Backlands.
City Magistrate Fabayo Azore ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against the accused based on evidence led by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharrat Mangru. The Magistrate also ruled that the caution statement and oral statement given to the police by the accused were voluntarily obtained.
A relative of the accused also testified at yesterday’s hearing.
Bobb-Semple had denied providing police with a caution statement but admitted that he signed the said statement after it was shown to him in court. He had also admitted to luring the little boy and sodomizing him.
The accused will go before a judge and jury at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
