Following the publication of a story captioned ‘Residents concerned about Berbice road contract’ in which residents expressed some concerns about the awarding of a contract to H. Nauth and Sons Construction Company, the contracting firm has moved to correct misconception that are being bandied about.
The company said that it is being unfairly targeted and maligned for trying to help out in certain situations. The principals of the company said, that they do not like smear campaigns and public battle and that the way the situation is playing out is unfortunate.
The company, which has an operation on the East Bank Berbice, has been engaged in doing maintenance work on the road. However, over the years and within a short space of time the road would deteriorate. However, they explained that doing maintenance work on the road was impossible from the start.
They said that when they were first asked to do some work on the road, the surface was in such a state that rehabilitation was a near impossibility. However, the company took on the task and tried to repair the 25-mile stretch of what was left of the road.
According to engineer Arjune Persaud, when certain sections were done other sections collapsed and so it went on and on. The road, he said, just cannot be patched and maintained. “The entire structure has to be rehabilitated.”
What the residents are saying is totally unfortunate. However, the company is not blaming the residents and said that probably some more public relations work should have been done by somebody to inform the resident what was happening.
Many contractors, including the Ministry of Public Works, did work on the road before, but the bottom line is that as soon as it rains it is back to square one.
Asphalt Manager, Terry Ramsahoy, said that the company was asked to patch and maintain a 25-mile stretch of road. On many occasions H. Nauth and Sons did work voluntarily and used excess stuff to fill holes and maintain the roads. “It’s not that they were paid a specific sum of money to undertake any major rehabilitation.
“What we were asked to do we did that and more. The residents were not properly notified and so the misconception came about.”
Information was recently leaked to residents that a $434.4 million contract was about to be awarded to the company, and due to the past experience, albeit unexplained, the residents expressed their concern.
A section of the East Bank Berbice road, from Everton to Lighttown, is soon to be rehabilitated. The residents had expressed their concerns about a few issues.
They are questioning why only the road from Everton to Mara is being done and not the section from New Amsterdam to Everton.
They were also questioning why the contract was being awarded to H. Nauth and Sons. The residents had told the media that they are not happy with the work Nauth has been doing on the road.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
