A supposedly drunken driver who was going at a terrific rate of speed, reportedly failed to stop at the five corner junction at the East Canje turn.
The car, HB 3738, reportedly crossed the road, knocked down a food stand, jumped the drain, smashed a gate post and the gate. It also knocked down a metal post attached to the Chinese Restaurant and carried along with the gate into the Restaurant.
Inside the restaurant was mayhem.
The out of control car with the metal gate and metal post still stuck to it crashed through the tables and chairs, missed a supporting post inside the restaurant before crashing through a wall and coming to rest.
The driver, Chetram Ramkissoon, of East Bank Berbice was arrested soon after and taken to the Reliance Police Station. However, he is claiming that at the time of the accident he was not the driver. He told investigators that he had parked the car and had gone into a shop to make a purchase when he noticed some one driving away with the car.
But the police are not buying his story. The car belongs to his brother.
On a number of occasions vehicle and motor cycle riders have lost control and ended up in the restaurant.
