A carpenter who hails from Ruimzight, West Coast Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he was brought before her to be charged for trafficking marijuana.
The accused, Ravindra Laichan, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty when charged for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the police, on February 28, Laichan had 1350 grams of cannabis at Four Miles, Port Kaituma, for the purpose of trafficking.
The case was prosecuted by Corporal Bharat Mangru who told the court that about 19:00 hours, ranks from the Port Kaituma Police Station were on a patrol when they stopped a vehicle.
He noted that there were several persons therein and the ranks proceeded to search them. During the search, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems was reportedly found on Laichan.
Mangru stated that the man was then arrested and charged. The Prosecutor offered objections to bail stating that no special reasons were raised by the accused.
Laichan, who was unrepresented by legal counsel, was told that despite the fact that he did not submit a bail application, the court considered a court bond but he would be remanded to prison.
The matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court where it will engage the attention of Magistrate Allan Wilson on May 6.
