Two murder accused will have to wait a week further for their trial to begin after the jury that was selected was discharged yesterday, one day after the trial began.
The men, Joshua Persaud called ‘Sunny Boy’ and ‘Bun Boy’, and Raphael Rene Morrison called ‘Red Head’ are indicted for the murder of Marlon Andrew Ramcharran, who was 18 at the time, on June 3, 2013.
The two men are being represented by attorney at law Mursulene Bacchus.
Following preliminary arguments, the trial began yesterday before Justice Diana Insanally and a mixed jury. However following the opening statement by Prosecutor attorney at law Renita Singh, there were further developments which forced the judge to discharge the jury and ordered the men remanded to jail until next Thursday when the matter is expected to make a fresh start with a new panel.
Reports had stated that Ramcharran, a carpenter, had lived with his mother and sister at their Lot 125 Tain Settlement, Corentyne home. His lifeless body with multiple chop wounds was found around 02:00h in Block C of the Tain New HousingSchem. The body was located near a minibus in front of a mechanic shop.
Ramcharran had reportedly left to purchase food at Lucky Star in Portuguese Quarters. He returned with the food and left to go out again and never returned.
His mother had stated that she was awakened around 02:00h by her sister who told her that her son had been chopped. The woman had stated that Ramcharran’s two friends who were with him had informed her of the unfortunate incident and she in turn went and informed her sister. She had hurried to the area where she saw the mutilated body of her son.
His father who lived at another location was informed and had called the police who responded promptly.
Marlon Ramcharran was reportedly the sole breadwinner of the house. His friends who were with him had related that following a misunderstanding, he was chopped.
Following investigations the men were arrested and charged and following a preliminary inquiry they were committed to stand trial in the high court.
