Suriname authorities have arrested four suspected pirates from Guyana who allegedly robbed five fishermen last November, forcing them to jump overboard. Two of the fishermen were reportedly killed, Suriname news said yesterday.
However, the reports would only give the names of the suspected pirates as BM, DV, MR and DP.
They are accused of robbing five fishermen off the coast of Coronie on November 12.
It was reported that the men were in a boat when they came under attack. They were ordered to jump overboard. Only three made it to shore.
It was unclear if the dead fishermen were Guyanese as details were not immediately available. A number of Guyanese are in Suriname jails for deadly pirate attacks, including Kevin “Long Hair” Narine, said to be one of Guyana’s most dangerous high seas robbers.
Fishermen, from both countries, have long been complaining of piracy in which their catch, bait, and even boats and engines are stolen.
The two countries have established a joint team to tackle the problem.
