-Eight teams to battle for semifinals spot
By Juanita Hooper
Four thrilling matches will be played today when the commencement of the
quarterfinals of the Mayor’s Annual Knockout Inter Ward Football Tournament gets under way at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground from 4pm.
Bourda, Kuru Kururu, Wortmanville, Alexander Village, Kitty, West Ruimveldt, West Ruimveldt Estate and Tiger Bay will be looking to earn barging rights and also qualify for the Semifinals which are secluded for Good Friday.
Albertown boys faced a 2-1 upset in the final game Friday evening when the ghetto team, Tiger Bay applied the necessary pressure to come out victorious with a major come back in the Tournament at the GFC.
The first of the battle was in the Alberttown boys favour as they skillfully maneuvered the ball across the field to keep the Tigers off.
Kevin Baptiste, the only scorer for Albertown netted his goal in the 30th minute to open Alberttown account which was never credited for the remainder of game. The opener came when Baptiste volleyed the ball over Dervin Bennett (Tiger’s goalkeeper) head.
Alberttown fiercely defended their territory as the Tigers pressed to reply to their goal; the referee’s whistle was eventually blown to signal the conclusion of the first half.
The tables were turned on the resumption of the second half when the Tigers displayed their true colours as if they were in the jungle. Solomon Austin, Captain of the Tigers opened the account to make the equalizer with a header. Austin’s goal was netted in the 48th minute from a corner kick from one of his teammates.
The heat was turned on some more on Alberttown when the Tigers showed the Alberttown boys how to defend their territory as they denied all goal access which were created. Alberttown’s Michael Stewart was given a red card in the 68th minute after aggressively tackling one of the Tigers.
The 1-all score line was changed to 2-1 when Okanie Fraser scored his second goal in the Tournament. Fraser blasted a right footer into the net which had too much pace for Alberttown’s keeper, Dexter Woodford, to stop in the 62nd minute.
The Tigers celebrated vibrantly when the referee blew the final whistle to signal the conclusion of the game; the win means that they have qualified for tonight’s quarterfinals.
West Ruimveldt (5-4) also won their game on penalty kicks in the first contest against Newtown Kitty in a crucial meeting. The two teams which had to go into extra time finished the 90 minute on a 2-all score line. Netting for West were Jerome Richardson (34th) and Phillip Rowley (78th); Randy Persaud and Gavin Bobb scored for Newtown Kitty in the 49th and 82nd minutes respectively.
Meanwhile, Bourda (2-0) and Kitty (1-0) won their games against North East La Penitence and Den Amstel respectively in Wednesday night matches. Keon Solomon and Jamal Blackman scored for Bourda, while Anthony Sancho scored for Kitty.
Thursday night’s match saw Alexander Village, West Ruimveldt Estate and Kuru Kururu coming out victorious in their matches. Alexander won a 4-1 penalty kick shootout, while Kuru Kururu defeated Kingston 2-1 in extra time; Devon Hope and Cordell Johnson were K&K scorers, on target for Kingston was Eon Parks. West Ruimveldt Estate qualified for the next round after given a walkover from Campbellville.
