Scottsburg United Cricket Club of Corriverton created a major upset in youth cricket in the Ancient County by knocking out Rose Hall Town (RHT) to reach the semifinals of the Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Under-13 cricket competition in Berbice.
In the quarterfinal, they took first innings points in the drawn match to advance.
Playing at the Scottsburg Ground, Rose Hall Town won the toss and took first strike. Medium pacer Vadanand Sugrim picked up two early wickets and along with two run outs; RHT found themselves 5 wickets down for just 39 runs.
They did not make progress after that as off spinner Eon Esau picked up the last 5 wickets to hasten the demise of the RHT team for 70 in their first innings.
Matthew Latchana top scored with 15. Bowling for Scottsburg Eon Esau took 5 for 13 from 7 overs and Vadanand Sugrim 2 for 13.
When Scottsburg United began their first innings reply, they found themselves in early trouble at 29 for 3. This position provided the platform for an unbeaten 32 from the bat of Chavin Arnachellum, Vadanand Sugrim hit 29 and Eon Esau 25 to guide Scottsburg past RHT’s total as they ended on 190 all out. Bowling for RHT, leg spinner Karran Singh took 2 for 40 and off spinner Daniel Lewis 2 for 60. Facing a first innings deficit of 120 runs, Rose Hall Town reached 70 for 4 at the end of the match, Daniel Lewis ended on 25* and Brandon Persaud 21.
In the other quarterfinal, Albion Community Centre had a massive first innings lead over Kildonan in their drawn match to also advance to the semifinals.
Enjoying home advantage, Albion won the toss and decided to bat first, they rattled up 212 for 5 declared in their first innings limitation of 50 overs; Narendra Permaul 40, Devendra Latchman 35 and Samuel Krishnasammy 30, the main contributors.
Bowling for Kildonan Joel Holder took 2 for 25. When Kildonan took to the crease they were bundled out for 45 with Joel Holder top scoring with 21*.
Bowling for Albion off spinner Balchand Baldeo took 4 for 9 from 6 overs and leg spinner Veerean Ramoo 3 for 8 from 3.1 overs.
