Plans to scout local talent soon
Former member of the Santos FC and football coach of the Lady Jags, Peter Barry has recently scored a first when he established a football academy in his adopted homeland England, after several years of coaching at various clubs in that country.
In a telephone interview with this newspaper shortly after the launching of the facility,
Barry revealed that the academy has received funding from a pro-active group in South London. He said that the name of the academy is Solid Rock Academy and it caters for players between the ages of 8 to 25 years.
The former footballer said that the main objective of the academy is to nurture young talent for duties into the professional clubs. He also said that administrators will cater for the development of coaches as well and will offer training sessions to this group so that they could bolster their skills and enhance their respective teams.
Touching on his achievements since landing in the UK, the young football administrator said, “Since coaching in the UK I have piloted my team to the Surrey South Eastern Combination League (SSECL) which to date is my biggest achievement.”
He explained that the SSECL is a very important championship where talented players are selected by scouts for duties in the professional and semi professional teams. “I am currently coaching at Whyteleaf F.C; a semi professional team,” intimated Barry.
The young coach has since informed that he is desirous of selecting local players for scholarships in the UK. “This can benefit Guyana in a great way since I am hoping to place young players on scholarships where they would be able to procure tertiary education even as they practice their trade,” said Barry.
He further pointed out that players that benefit from the European sojourn may be able to effectively represent Guyana at future international tournaments.
Barry also revealed that his projections also encompass the involvement of local coaches. “I would like to give coaches a chance to bolster their knowledge through enhancement programmes that can also serve to introduce them to the modernized techniques that exist here in the United Kingdom,” said Barry.
Shortly before migrating to Europe, Barry had served as part of the coaching staff that traveled to Mexico with the Lady Jags football squad. “I would like to continue to support Guyana football and take it to the highest level,” he concluded.
