The “Annual Independence Swim Meet” for persons with disabilities will once again be sponsored by the National Sports Commission and the Colgrain Swimming Pool will be the venue for the competition which is scheduled for today commencing at 09:30hrs.
Several Special Schools and organizations have confirmed their participation in the competition. Among them are:- David Rose School for the Handicapped, Special Needs School East Bank Demerara, St. Barnabas Special School, Open Doors Centre, Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, Different Abled Athletic Club, Community Based Rehabilitation Programme.
Competition will be contested in Age categories: 15 & under, 16 & over and Open.
Events will be for male and female with intellectual disabilities, visual impairment, physically challenged and male amputees.
Events will include freestyle, backstroke and aquatic walk for non swimmers while novices (persons who cannot swim) will be involved in dog paddle.
The physically challenged will not be left out; their events will be tube races. Events range from 10 yards to 50 yards.
