The Guyana Defence Force yesterday presented a cheque to the value of $150,000 to Miss Zonel Hartley for her outstanding performance at last year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.
Miss Hartley, the daughter of the late army officer Lieutenant Colonel, Alonzo Hartley, was also presented with the Chief of Staff Award for Academic Excellence. She is the first to be so awarded, since the Force only recently introduced this award for children of its members, including civilians who would have performed credibly at the exams.
According to the GDF, the minimum eligibility for the award is five grade one passes at one sitting, however Hartley exceeded that by copping Seven Grade One passes and Four Grade Two’s while attending the Bishop’s High School.
Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best, congratulated the confident teenager on behalf of Officers and Ranks and Civilian employees and wished her continued success as she pursues further academic studies. Miss Hartley is now attending Queen’s College where she is preparing for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) in six subject areas. She is also in the process of acquiring a Mexican scholarship.
The teen, after receiving her reward expressed appreciation to all who supported her throughout her studies and encouraged the children of other officers to do their best and reap good rewards.
