The police seem to be on a sharper look out for traffic violations. Yesterday, many lawbreakers faced Magistrate Priya Beharry, charged with various traffic violations.
One, Mr. Dhanraj Singh, was slapped with two charges—driving under the influence and dangerous driving. He had collided with another vehicle.
He pleaded not guilty to both offences, and offered an explanation of his version of the incident.
Singh said that he was backing onto a bridge, and was halfway on the said bridge when the other vehicle (driven by a woman) approached.
He suspected that the woman driver did not average properly, proceeded onward, and ended up getting her vehicle damaged.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that the accused was later (after the incident) seen on the road in a drunken state. He was placed on $50,000 bail and is to return to court on November 2.
Four others were charged with traffic violations; mainly driving without seat belts and operating a vehicle while using a cell phone, all the result of the police zero tolerance campaign which began last year.
