Kaieteur News – Following in her mother’s footsteps, 23-year-old Akeela Lovell is making a name for herself through her baking skills.
Lovell is the owner of ‘Akeela Bakes’ which offers sweet and savoury delicacies. She is also a student at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), and a teacher at the Islamic School.
During an interview with The Waterfalls, Akeela shared that she learned her trade from her mother, who is also a baker and the owner of CakePro and M’s Cake Heaven and Sweet Treats.
“Growing up, I always longed to be as great as my mom since she would always create something new for us every Sunday for dessert.”
Akeela shared that growing up with seven siblings, every Sunday her mother made desserts, since Sunday was their day for relaxation and family time.
Since then, she said, watching her mother being creative inspired her to want to become a baker.
With her passion fuelled by her mother’s work, Akeela launched her business in January 2019. She shared that while her love for baking pushed her to open her food business, financial constraints also played a role.
“At Akeela Bakes you can find all your sweet and savoury delicacies for all your events , cravings, gift ideas and special occasions.”
Menu items (all halal) includes, cakes, cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries, macaron and baked macaroni. Some popular items on the menu are: pastries, assorted doughnuts and chicken puffs .
Akeela added, “Customers are huge fans because my items are unique to my business.”
Akeela Bakes caters for Birthdays, Weddings, Baby showers, Bridal showers and all other special occasions.
The business operates on an order only basis and is located at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara. Delivery is also offered to customers.
Akeela shared that since starting her own business she learned, “Team work makes the dream work and God should be the main person on your team since without him there is no success. Find your target audience, since I have started my business I’ve created and tested many different variety of sweet treats that are gourmet. But with gourmet comes various expenses and you will not always find customers that are willing to pay for “gourmet” items. However with this, you can also help to create an amazing customer experience by working with their budget to get them all that they desire.”
She also shared her journey as a business owner.
“It was not always a bed of roses since when I started my small business. The pandemic hit us a few months later, then I started focusing more on my studies and a little less on my business, but as my business grew and I found my loyal customers, they were always so understanding and supportive at all times so my business was not allowed to go through the mud. My loyal customers helped to keep my business alive.”
Akeela said that her long term goal is to create gourmet treats that are unique to her business.
“I believe that although I am on a pause currently, focusing on my studies, I have hit the market with unique treats that my customers truly love and that are worth every penny.”
