About 11:30hrs on Tuesday, an unemployed Bishram Sookram, 21, of Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice, who is said to be an alcoholic and was under the influence, chopped his mother, Rajmatie Sookram, several times to her head and arm with a cutlass. The chopping was preceded by an argument.
The commotion attracted the attention of the ranks of the nearby Sisters Police Station (next door) who responded promptly. Upon seeing the ranks approaching and in an effort to escape, the drunken man scooted for the nearby Berbice River with the ranks in hot pursuit.
Sookram jumped into the Berbice River with the cutlass in his hand. However, two brave ranks followed suit and plunged over board after the deranged man. As they were closing in on him, he dropped the cutlass in the River and put up a fight with one of the ranks.
However, the other rank went to the assistance of his colleague and managed to subdue the man and brought him to shore, where he was placed under arrest.
Meanwhile his mother who lost a lot of blood was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted for medical attention before being discharged.
The man who is the eldest child for his parents is the only son. He is being processed for court.
