In what was defined as a spirited display, Guyana’s lone representative at the just concluded Manuel Suarez Weightlifting Championship, Matthew Assing, clinched three bronze medals after registering a commendable total of 170kg. The lad snatched 80kg and jerked an additional 90kg at the Havana, Cuba, staged championships, March 20-26. Cuban, Felix Ugarte, copped the first prize, while Panamanian, Abdiel Batista, finished in second place.
Assing was this country’s lone representative after two other qualifiers, Jonathan Ford and distaff participant, Krystal Chandraban, were omitted because of inadequate funds. The team returned to Guyana last Tuesday morning and manager/coach, Sean Cozier said that despite his inability to capture gold, Assing has procured valuable experience at an international meet which could stand him in good stead for future engagements. “We were very happy to have had the opportunity to participate and score a bit of success,” he reiterated.
He also extends gratitude to executive officials of the GAWA for their continued faith in the lifters. “We would also like to thank the Friendship Oxygen Co. and the Guyana Olympic Association for their financial assistance, which contributed to the process,” concluded Cozier.
Executives are now eying the World Masters Games scheduled for Auckland, New Zealand, from 20th – 30th April and will immediately commence preparations.
