Whenever they face each other it is always a fierce and close rivalry and their clash lived up to
all expectations, but North Ruimveldt as they had done on previous occasions prevailed by a 4-2 margin against Festival City when play in the Ministry of Health/Petra Organization Soft Shoe Football Competition continued on Wednesday, at the sponsor’s ground on Brickdam & Vlissingen Road.
The two teams that originate from the community of North Ruimveldt thrilled a capacity crowd that threatened to burst the perimeter of the venue with some entertaining football as they went at each other in an intense affair.
Anthony Sancho handed North Ruimveldt the lead in the ninth minute when he reacted to a pass quickly to sweep past the goalkeeper to his left. Eon Alleyne, however, responded for Festival City shortly after when he expertly chested a Dwayne Lawrence chip from the right side into the far corner.
North Ruimveldt’s experienced talisman Gerald Grittens was in no mood to entertain any defiance and he gave them the lead close to the half with a clinical header past the keeper. The score line remained the same at the break.
On the resumption, North Ruimveldt stretched their advantage through the energetic Joshua Browne, who fired past the goalkeeper, who had slipped in his attempt to intercept a through ball from the back.
Once again Festival City responded and who else it was that led the fight back but Alleyne, who raced on to a loose ball, before sliding it past the advancing keeper and then punched it into an empty goal as they trailed 2-3.
With time running out, Festival City were forced to commit more players forward and they paid the price when Grittens unleashed a powerful right-footer which the opposing goalkeeper could only parry into his goal, before the final whistle sounded by Referee Wayne Griffith.
Globe Yard squeezed past Cross Street 2-1 in another game that had their respective supporters screaming with excitement. Shalomo Hunter gave Cross Street the ascendancy in the third minute with a clever finish from the left side.
Andrew Murray Jnr then equalised for Globe Yard in the 17th minute through a penalty, before Rolex Smith closed the deal for Globe Yard in the 28th minute, firing into the left corner. In other results, West Back Road edged Channel-9 Warriors 2-1. Jamal Haynes netted a brace in the 17th and 27th minutes, while Kemo Lawrence sixth minute strike was the lone response for the Warriors.
Laing Avenue and Campbellville traded goals frequently, but could only manage a 4-4 draw. Roy Cassou booted in a brace for Laing Avenue, while David George and Orlando Ricketts supported with one apiece.
For Campbellville, Okeri Codrington scored a pair, while Kenneth Jackson and Ozeal Small each had a goal. Tucville and North East La Penitence played to a 1-1 result. Calvin Moore scored for North East La Penitence in the third minute, while Dennis Edwards responded in the 11th minute for Tucville
Holmes Street won via walkover against California Square. Action in the competition is set to continue tomorrow at the same venue with the final group fixtures. In the opening fixture at 19:00hrs, Broad Street takes on Ministry of Health, while Albouystown tackles Young Ballers from 19:45hrs.
