Access to and from the mining town of Madhia was disrupted yesterday when a laden lorry
attempted to make it across an already fragile bridge.
Persons on the ground said that the bridge was opened a few days ago to accommodate only light vehicles because of slight damage. However a motor lorry driver ignoring the erected signs took the chance to cross.
As a result of the weight, the bridge broke as one of the truck wheels broke through, causing the vehicle to become stuck. A number of persons and vehicles trying to go in and out of the community were stranded.
The bridge is said to be the last access bridge to Mahdia.
