…Fire service, residents prevent further losses
Fire ravaged a storage bond belonging to a former nurse yesterday afternoon, in Plaisance,
East Coast Demerara.
Joyceline Prince, 65, of Lot 18 Victoria Road, Plaisance, had been burning garbage behind her house, when she left the blaze unattended to cut a cherry tree. According to neighbours, the fire rapidly spread along the dry grass to the storage bond.
Neighbours who noticed the smoke alerted the other occupants of the building, who made efforts to douse the fire and made contact with Prince.
The Guyana Fire Service arrived with two fire tenders approximately 10 minutes after being called and prevented the fire from spreading to the house.
According to residents, they had alerted the Neighbourhood Democratic Council about Prince, since she habitually burned garbage around the building. In addition, they claimed that the elderly woman was in the habit of piling up rubbish around the premises, which they were obligated to clean up.
They stated that the Health Inspector had visited and had informed them that there was nothing they could do about the matter.
There was no word on the losses incurred by the fire.
