It was a night that those in attendance would be talking about at least for the next
year; a colorful evening where male and female experts in the bodybuilding arena shone in all their glory.
Some sixty-eight athletes graced the National Cultural Centre’s stage on the night and when the posing was done, Godfrey Stoby of Top End Gym emerged as the new Overall King of the Flex Night International stage.
Stoby, competing in the most competitive category of the night – Mr. Flex Night (Under 176lbs) – was pushed to the hilt by Sylvester Andrews of Body Max Gym but gained the judges’ nod for the top spot in an intense showdown.
This category attracted four competitors and it was clear from the time the athletes were asked to take the stage that the battle was between Stoby and Andrews. Following their free posing routine and compulsory posing, Judge #1, veteran Frank Tucker required a further comparison between the two well chiseled and toned athletes to decide the winner.
The other category winners in the Mr. Flex Night showdowns that Stoby took care of were Zallim Bacchus of Tej Mohall Gym (Under143lbs); Sylvan Gardener (Buddy’s Gym) Under 165lbs; Marlon Bennett (X-Treme Fitness Gym) Under 154lbs class and Alex Hamilton representing Fitness Zone
Gym in the Over 176lbs showdown.
Proceedings got underway with the Mr. Flex Night Physique (Open) that attracted 13 athletes. This was the first time that this category was added to the Flex Night programme and it was well received by the attendees.
Inking his name in the history books as the first winner of this category was Daes Burgzorg of Suriname who was pushed to the hilt by local Sports Journalist Emmerson Campbell of Body Max Gym who had to settle for second place.
A bright prospect in the making, Zallim Bacchus of Tej Mohall Gym in Corentyne took the top spot in the Mr. Flex Night (Under 143lbs) gaining the judges’ nod from the seven athletes in this category with a solid performance.
While the male athletes had their time to shine, the ladies started first in the Ms. Flex Night Best Legs which attracted 11 beautiful young ladies. They appeared in the Mini Dress sequence and were later required to perform the compulsory poses (four quarter turns).
The multi talented athlete Alisha Fortune (GDF Gym) competing in this category for the first time displayed her versatility by brushing aside her local rivals and the three Surinamese to win.
Setting herself apart from the rest of the opposition in a clinical display of a balanced tight and toned body to win the Ms. Bikini (short) and the Overall contest was Shawnell Warner of Fitness Paradise Gym. Warner, ever since hitting the stage has shown that she is a fierce competitor who aims to better her previous performance.
The winner of the Ms. Bikini Tall contest was Vanety Bouwe of Suriname. The top two from the Short and Tall competitions later returned to decide the overall winner and Warner outdid her rivals.
The Guest Poser for the night, Suriname’s first Professional bodybuilder, Eddy Wilson entertained the crowd with his imposing physique while the Guyana Prison Service also entertained after the intermission with their presentation of a Muscle Skit.
Apart from the many medals, trophies and hampers that were distributed to the athletes, the top five in the overall showdown were presented with cash prizes of $200,000, $150,000, $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000.
