The Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) will be launching its regular “Most Improved School Yard Competition – for Healthy Schools in Guyana”, next week Monday, October 20.
The objectives of this event are to raise awareness of the importance of the environment, provide an opportunity for teachers, parents and children to work together on a project aimed at improving conditions within school environment, and to improve the aesthetics of fifteen school yards in Georgetown.
The categories to be judged for the school competition include water sanitation, garbage collection and disposal and condition of school yards. Fifteen primary schools will participate in the competition which will run for four weeks. Certificates and prizes will be handed over to winners at a subsequent ceremony.
Earlier in the year, ECHO commenced its continued quest to reduce 30 percent litter in 20 schools within six weeks. The body sought to raise environmental awareness in children and to improve the physical condition in 20 schools within the same time period. The event was opened with the planting of trees.
Executive Director of ECHO Royston King has emphasised the positives of encouraging children to love the environment from an early age. He said the value of the tree-planting exercise was environmental as well as nutritional and that all schools should be part of caring for the environment.
He noted that the mission of ECHO is to increase the eco-consciousness and social responsibility of members by providing them access to the natural world, state-of-the-art social media, innovative educational programmes and resources.
“Through diverse collaborative partnerships, ECHO will develop the next generation of leaders who will have the knowledge, passion and skills to promote and work toward environmental sustainability.”
Also, the vision of the organization is to be the largest and most widespread and comprehensive organization for youth environmental education, connecting the community with youth, offering expansive programmes, and providing resources for schools nation-wide.
Participating primary schools include: St Margaret’s, St Stephen, East La Penitence, South Ruimveldt, Tucville, F.E. Pollard, J.E. Burnham, Enterprise, Stella Maris, North Georgetown, St Angela’s, Ketley, St Sidwell’s and Smith’s Memorial.
