Fyrish Black Sharks basketball team was in a devastating mood as they devoured the Rose Hall Town Basket Ball team for a runaway 59-34 win when play in the Legend Classic Basketball Tournament for teams in Berbice began.
When the two teams met in the opening encounter played at the Area H Basketball court last weekend it was the Black Sharks that looked hungrier as they made sure that their travel was not in vain to secure the easy win.
When the game began the Black Sharks were fast out of their lanes and raced to a seven point lead before the Jammers were off the mark. However, the Jammers were able to steady themselves to be trailing at 9-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Jammers continued to fight back and crawl back into the game to be trailing at 20-21 by half time.
The Sharks began to take total control as the second half began with no responses for the Black Sharks second half surge as the totally dominated proceeding, racing to a 48-29 lead by the end of the third quarter. They continued their dominance in the final segment for the 59-34 blowout.
Leading the way for the Black Sharks were Jewell Fraser, with three shots from down town and Linden Joseph as they scored a game high 15 points each with Desie Douglas supporting with eight.
The Jammers were lead by Kevin Deolall with 10 points, Perry Cort with nine and Troy Paul seven.
The tournament, which is organized by sports enthusiast Vibert Garrett, is being played for teams in both East and West Berbice with matches slated for both regions.
Six teams divided into two groups are participating in the competition with Group A comprising -Jammers of Rose Hall Town Corentyne, Fyrish Black Sharks also of Corentyne and Canje Knights of East Canje.
Group B- has Smythfield Rockers, Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice and New Amsterdam Warriors.
The competition will continue next Sunday with a Group B encounter with Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice being at home to Smythfield Jammers.
Incentives will be available for the top teams and outstanding individual players. The competition is being sponsored by Nand Persaud and Company Limited and Poonai Drug Store of Rose hall Town and is being played on a round robin basis at the group stages with the top two teams in each group emerging to contest the semifinals. The winners will meet in the final.
