– says Bobby Ramroop demonstrated vision, courage
Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has lauded the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation (New GPC)’s acquisition of the Guyana franchise of the first-ever Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
According to Dr Ramsammy, the company’s owner, Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop “continues to demonstrate vision and courage in investing his resources. His success in bidding for the Guyana franchise and in bidding for the CPL sponsorship must be commended and be seen as a Guyanese success story.”
“I know Bobby Ramroop does not look out for recognition. But his success brings pride to Guyana and to all of us. As a citizen of Guyana and as one who holds high office in my country, I am extremely proud that a local company will be on the big stage. In some ways, this success is demonstrative of the far way we have developed as a country and being able to compete with the big businesses of the Caribbean,” Ramsammy expressed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The New GPC has been under scrutiny by the National Assembly for its multi-million-dollar awards of contracts to supply government with pharmaceuticals.
The company was recently announced as the overall sponsor of the competition. Dr Ramroop, who has long been known as former President Bharrat Jagdeo’s best friend, will now pay all the match fees, all the Man of the Match awards, and more than anything else, will control the broadcast rights throughout the region and further afield.
The CPL will now be known as the Limacol CPL, said the announcers of the expanded role Dr Ramroop’s company is playing in the competition.
The New GPC’s sponsorship is a multi-year agreement which will affect all aspects of the tournament, from branding and uniforms to advertising, marketing and promotions. New GPC is also the franchise owner for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Regarding questions over the moneys being paid by New GPC – a closely guarded secret – the Agriculture Minister was puzzled why a small group in Guyana would want to “wish that Dr. Ramroop and the New GPC fail and end up like Stanford”.
Allen Stanford was a US billionaire based in Antigua who brought popularity to the T20 cricket match by doling out millions in fees to cricketers in the region. However, he was jailed in the US as investigators found he was operating a Ponzi-like scheme with investors, causing thousands to lose their savings in the region.
“It is interesting to note that the few who would cast aspersions on the success of the New GPC in being at the very top of making CPL a reality, themselves did not find it possible to try to be a part of the CPL and to be part of the pride that cricket bestows on this nation and on the Region.
I believe that all Guyana should stand behind Dr. Bobby Ramroop and the New GPC and behind CPL.”
CPL matches are scheduled between July 29 and August 26 this year and are to be played between six teams.
