Works began on the rehabilitation of the main sewage systems around central Georgetown as part of a programme to upgrade the existing systems.
At Light and Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, recently GWI’s Project Manager, Orin Browne, confirmed that the programme is expected to run for two years. Works also commenced in Fifth Street with the laying of six-inch pipes as a replacement to alleviate present sewage system.
Underscoring that works should have started last year on the sewage system, he said there was a setback that was remedied and works have fully commenced around the city.
The Project, has been dubbed the Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme, and is valued at US$10M and will be funded by a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Guyana.
The contract was awarded to S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Contracting Services in collaboration with Nabi Construction Inc. as the Contracting Firms.
This aspect of priority works will amount to in excess of $450M. The two construction companies will be pooling their resources from their vast experience in work of similar nature.
“We will be working expeditiously to bring relief to the citizens of Georgetown. There are several streets around the city that would be affected over the course of the execution of the project; Light Street, Quamina Street, Sussex Street, Camp Street, Regent Street, New Market Street, Saffon Street…It is the entire ring mains of central Georgetown.” GWI Project Manger explained.
Brown said that approximately 12 kilometers of pipe will be laid in addition to the rehabilitation of the entire sewer system.
He further explained that 24 pump stations will be rehabilitated and the system will be raised structurally which would modernise the system.
This, he said, will ultimately enhance and alleviate the existing sewage problems, since the system currently in use is approximately 80 years old.
“The old pipes are encrusted and clogged. With the replacements; it will be a state of the art new system with 24 hours functionality bringing adequate relief to the business community and residents in general.”
Brown noted that safety will be paramount. GWI will be working in collaboration with the municipality, the police and other stakeholders to ensure that there is minimum disruption.
Browne said that included in the entire sewer upgrade is the purchase of a $72 Million Hi-Vac Truck Mounted Aquatech Vacuum Cleaner which is a “Supersucker” vacuum bought to enhance the cleaning system. The truck was bought by the Government through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
GWI Sanitation Manager, Rensford Joseph, said that the television, print media and the radio will be used to highlight where works are going to be done to assist persons in knowing which roads will be temporarily disrupted. Persons requesting further details can contact GWI’s office.
