‘Guinness Greatest of de Streets’ Futsal Tournament
– West Front Road finish third
By Rawle Welch
Throughout the tournament they were known as the ‘giant killers’, and that sobriquet held true as underdogs Leopold Street broke the hearts of supporters of defending champions Back Circle after registering a narrow 1-0 triumph to become the new kings of the Banks DIH-sponsored ‘Guinness Greatest of de Streets’ Futsal Tournament which ended on Sunday evening, at the National Park.
Before what many declared was perhaps the largest turnout of spectators, the West Georgetown-based side proved once again to be the best exponents of protecting a lead, displaying defensive mastery to dethrone the reigning champions after the skilful Omallo Williams had given them the ascendancy in the 13th minute of the first period.
Williams, who was a junior standout for Pele FC, showed his superior skills had no equal as he dribbled past two defenders after receiving a pass from just before the half way line in his own half, eased past two attempts to restrict his advance forward and curled a fierce left-foot shot into the back of the goal.
After that, Williams and teammate Konata Manning combined beautifully to torment the Back Circle defence, but the former champs held firm and went to the break just one goal down and everything to play for in the second period.
On the resumption, Dexter Bentick, Andy Duke and company tried desperately to level the scores, but the trademark ‘stone wall’ defence of Leopold Street repelled all aspirations to breach the fortress.
Williams and Manning went close to stretching their team’s advantage with shots that landed agonizingly close to the uprights.
Despite throwing every player forward Back Circle were held at bay by the airtight defence of the opposition, before the final whistle sounded brining the entire arena into euphoric uproar for the new champions.
In the third place playoff, West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ came from a goal down to crush a game, but clearly outclassed Broad Street ‘B’ 4-1.
The experienced Jimmy Gravesande had given Broad Street ‘B’ a flicker of hope when he netted in the 6th minute of play, but that was quickly erased by a 9th minuet strike from Sheldon David.
Michael Oie then gave West Front Road the lead for the first time in the match when he scored in the 17th minute, before Leon Yaw and David netted with a minute of each other to seal the victory and third prize.
Leopold Street walked away with the top prize of $600,000 and a trophy, Back Circle received $300,000 plus a trophy, West Front Road $ 200,000 and Broad Street ‘B’ $100,000.
In the exhibition segment, Guinness Bar defeated Upper Level Barber Shop 2-1 with Denis Edwards netting a brace, while Eric Moses made the lone strike for the losers.
In the third place playoff, GT Masters clipped Clippers Barber Shop 2-1 with Mark Anthony and Sherwin Scott, the goalscorers for the winners, while Timothy Telford responded for Clippers.
Earlier, Sales & Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Carlton Joao kicked off the ball to signal the start of the final which also had in attendance Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, PRO Troy Peters, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart and co-organisers Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole among others.
