All the big names in local motor racing will take to the starting grid today to
compete in the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with former Group 3 champion Ryan Rahaman at his garage in Sandy Babb Street, Kitty where the veteran mechanic Barbadian Freddie Mapp was seen putting in the final preparations for today’s showdown.
Rahaman, who has long been touted as one of the smoothest and natural drivers on the local scene speaking with this newspaper said that even though his preparations was hampered a bit by his busy schedule in the family’s business which is undergoing an expansion, he is ready to do his best against the top drivers in the country.
“I’m now campaigning in the Group 4 category and everyone knows that some of the fastest cars in the country compete in this division and even though the task will be difficult I promise to do my best and see what happens after that,” he stated with a beaming smile.
The usually reserved driver who sometime ago dominated the Group 2B and 3 categories said he is relishing the fact that he is no longer the favourite, but rather the underdog and this new development has made him determined to re-establish himself among the top drivers in the land.
“I know that regaining the status of being among the elite in the country will take some doing, especially when you have to contend with the likes of Mark Vieira, Shawn King, Kevin Jeffrey, Andrew King, Paul Vieira, Keith Evelyn, Vishok Persaud, Gavin Gayadin and Irfaan Kalamadeen, all very good drivers with some extremely fast machines, but I have a job to do and I intend to do it to the best of my ability,” Rahaman stated.
He added that competing in the division for the second year has been a challenge, but informed that the car (Ford Sierra Cosworth) is still a work in progress and he is hoping that it reaches its full potential very soon.
Rahaman expressed thanks to the following entities for their continued support over the years and they are Valvoline, GEM Magazine, Stag Beer, Guysons Engineering and JR Burgers.
Meanwhile, the Superbike category is also shaping up to be an exciting affair with riders the caliber of Canadian Kevin Graham, Guyana’s Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira, Gregory Lopes and Joel Neblett, all gearing up to produce some riveting performances.
The Lower categories among the cars are also fully subscribed and fans should be in for a real treat throughout the day.
The Novices category is loaded with drivers with serious aspirations and word is that their competitive juices are flowing fully so expect some close finishes and daredevilry, while the Group 2A and B divisions, seem set to duplicate the other groups in terms of keen rivalry.
First race starts at 09:00 hrs and adults are required to pay $1500, while children and vehicles will be admitted free.
