An 18-year-old miner has been hospitalized after being chopped and beaten unconscious on Thursday last, allegedly while being robbed of two-and-a-half ounces of gold.
George Savory of Moruca, Region One told Kaieteur News that he is a gold miner in Port Kaituma, North West District.
He claimed that on Thursday last, he left his camp at Eyelash Backdam to go on the “front road” to wait for a truck to transport him home, but after waiting for several hours he left to go back to the camp.
He told this publication that although it was around 23:00 hrs, he was not scared to walk through the track, leading to the camp, since it was a “usual something”.
“When I was walking, shining my torch-light, two men come and ask me for money so I tell them I don’t have any money and they start beating me and one of them chopped me with a cutlass, after that I can’t remember anything else,” the injured man told Kaieteur News.
He was then rushed to Matthew’s Ridge hospital before being transferred to GPHC.
