Suriname on Monday honored outgoing Guyanese Ambassador, Merlin Udho,
with one of the country’s highest decorations.
Also conferred with the Grand Ribbon of the Order of the Yellow Star was Brazilian Ambassador José Delouses Machado whose tenure is up too.
According to President, Desi Bouterse, both officials made positive contributions towards improving the relations between their respective countries and Suriname.
Udho has helped with coordinating Presidential visits to both countries and was crucial in getting Guyana’s support for a regional sport academy to be established in Suriname.
She also worked in establishing mechanisms to deal with crime in the Corentyne River, a waterway that separates Guyana and Suriname.
Replacing Udho will be Keith George, who until recently was the Director of Frontiers Division of the Ministry. He has been with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the past 19 years and has been instrumental in work to protect the country’s maritime borders.
