Expects better performance in upcoming event
After five months of devoted offseason training which started last October and
concluded a few days ago at the Quantum Athletics Club, Trinidad and Tobago under the watchful eyes of Trevor James, a 1972 Olympian, former Royals Youth Movement (RYM) track star athlete, Philip Drayton clocked 49:02 seconds in the 400m in his first appearance at the National Athletics Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAATT) Developmental Meet on February 11 at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
Drayton, who was second behind his teammate, Ryan Benjamin (48.37) stated that he is satisfied with his performance and indicated that he is right where he wanted to be for the start of the season.
“I’m pretty much satisfied with my performance knowing it’s my first race of the year. I have a lot more work to do but it’s too early in the year to run fast timings, so I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”
Praising his five months of offseason training and describing it as challenging, Drayton stated that he has never done offseason training to this magnitude in Guyana and was grateful for the sessions since it gave his body ample time to rest and also prepare for competition.
“The five months offseason was really challenging, it comprised of technical work like running techniques, which will get me comfortable and acclimatized to the synthetic track, palates, aqua aerobics, high intensity muscle stimulations of lactic control and nutrition, it was developed in such a way that full rest was given to my body along with mental preparation.”
Drayton’s aim for this new athletic season will be increasing his chances of attaining the qualifying standards in the 400m before entry closes in July for the 2012 London Olympic Games as he looks to improve his timings in every major meet.
“I’m looking to run an early 48 seconds and also to keep getting my timings down at every major meet. My aim is hitting the qualifying standard for the London games later in the year; the closing entry is in July so I have enough time to get the work in that is required so I can reap the benefits.”
The athlete who is currently pursuing his Olympic quest in Trinidad informed that he is currently undergoing pre-competition training (speed work) which started earlier in the week. This training will take will take him into his second competition for the year on February 25, the Southern Games Trials.
“We (Quantum Athletics Club) will be stepping up the training from this week, beginning with speed work. My next meet will be next week.”
