– Georgetown/Linden rivalry imminent
Hundreds thronged the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Hard Court in Linden Saturday night to witness what became an intense battle for the eight spots up for grabs in the Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 Basketball Championships.
The MSC Court hosted the Super-16 stage of the tournament with teams facing the daunting task of winning, or go home. The eight teams will battle on Saturday on the tarmac of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to determine who makes the final cut.
Pitt Bulls, Jets, Royals, Unknowns, Pacesetters A, Above the Rim, Full Clip and King Street Ballers are the eight teams that have advanced.
In the opening game of the night, Full Clips sent Kester Gomes and his Knights team packing, winning 15–13 in a game that set the tone of the evening. Assassins then became the only Linden team to be booted from the tournament when they lost to King Street Ballers 13–14 in a definite thriller.
Gladiators from Bartica had a lot to say about being able to compete with the players and teams from around Guyana, but they were humbled and brought back to reality when the Albouystown-based, Above the Rim dismissed them 23–10. Orin Rose and his Unknowns unit defeated Moses Pacesetters 15–9 as they took advantage of home-court advantaged. The large and enthused crowd did not fail to support and cheer their home teams.
Victory Valley Royals were arguably the most favored Linden team in the Super–16 round, given the fact that they are the Linden Zone Champions. Having lost only one game so far in the entire tournament, the Royals disposed of Slash 16-14 in a game that had the spectators on their feet for the entire second half due to the highly competitive nature of the contest between the two sides.
The game of the night would be that of Cronics of Georgetown and Jets of Linden with the home side winning 10-7 after being reduced to two men half-way through the second half. Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph, Shane Webster and Leonard Caleb were the three players that turned up for the Jets with their fourth player Lawrence DeCosta missing the game.
Ryan ‘Showtime’ Melville, using his witty crossovers and good ball handling skills, easily made his way into the paint and went hard to Webster, forcing Jets’ ‘big man’ to be fouled out with three minutes remaining in the game and his side down 6-7.
But Joseph using his experience coupled with some fine finishes from Caleb, was enough to not only get them back in the game and help them advance to the final eight, much to the delight of the massive crowd.
Pacesetters A with the likes of Travis Burnett, Stephan Gillis, Royston Siland and Naylon Loncke demolished Berbice’s Team Demolition 21-7. Ryan Gullen, Shelroy Thomas and Rudy James are the three powerhouses of Pitt Bulls, who tore apart Dem Amstel 18-7.
Fans had the opportunity to get in on the action with lots of cash novelties and free Mackeson giveaways all night, compliments of Ansa McAl. Supporters won from cash to Mackeson 3-on-3 T-shirts for participating in the nationwide competition.
