A vessel is on fire in the Essequibo River, just off Leguan, an island at the mouth of the Essequibo River. The blaze was spotted shortly after 17:00 hours.
Small vessels are now rushing to the aid of the people on board the burning vessel.
The blaze could be spotted for miles. The Lighthouse later reported that it was trying to raise other vessels to rush to the aid of the stricken vessel to no avail.
Initially, the boat on fire was thought to be a trawler but observers say that it is a much larger vessel.
