Osafa Dos Santos becomes first Novice Champion
After a nearly three-hour battle Daniel Lopes emerged as the Boys 18 and under champion when he defeated Gavin Lewis 7-6 (7-3), 0-6, 10-6 in the final which was played on Saturday, at the GBTI Hardcourts in Bel Air.
The vastly improved Lopes and Lewis continued their evenly matched rivalry for the title with Lewis racing ahead to 3-0 lead, holding both his service games at love, before Lopes found a groove and rattled off the next two games without dropping a point.
The 6th game was a fierce battle as both players hit heavy ground-strokes to back up their steady serves.
After five deuces Lopes again lost his serve which gave Lewis a 4-2 lead, before both players lost serve in the next two games, resulting in a 5-3 lead for Lewis.
Lopes, however, dug deep and tied the match up at 5-5, before both players once again lost serve sending the match into a tie-break which was all Lopes as he took it 7-3.In the second set, Lewis made some adjustments, occasionally going for the big shots and he wrapped up the set 6-0 despite several games going to multiple deuces as Lopes desperately fought to avoid the bagel.
Lopes would have his say in the super tie break decider as he won the last 4 points to take the set 10-6 after both players went for broke with their ground-strokes.
Earlier, action in the first ever Novices category came to an end with Osafa Dos Santos emerged champion after he defeated Harrinand Persaud 7-3, 7-4 in their tie-break sets encounter.
Dos Santos had earlier overcame Lambert Robertson 5-7, 7-3, 7-3 in his semi-final encounter, while Harrinand defeated Aaron 7-3, 3-7, 7-3 to come out the winner from a field of 28 participants.
Matches continued with exciting action scheduled every day from 18:00 hrs until the tournament ends on Thursday with the Men’s Final.
