Four days after he was released from the Brickdam police lockups after he was arrested the Police Public Relations yesterday offered an apology to popular entertainer Lyndon Jones called “Jumbie”.
The comedian and father of three, was arrested on Christmas Eve around 20:00 hours outside Nigel’s Supermarket, Robb and Light Streets, while waiting for his fiancée who had gone shopping, on the suspicion of a robbery.
The police in a press release stated that a robbery was committed on businessman, Somora Jordan, and a message was sent out via the police radio network that one “Jumbie’ and one “Satan” had committed the robbery.
Police patrol ranks subsequently spotted Jones; he was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
According to the police, Jones’s detention was prolonged due to “intense policing and the holiday period”.
It was not until Monday December 27, 2010, following queries and intervention by the Assistant Commissioner “Law Enforcement”, that the police recognised they had the wrong person in custody, the police stated.
“It was not the “Jumbie” who was wanted in connection with the robbery; that Jumbie is still at large” the police said.
“The Police Force wishes to offer an unqualified apology for the consternation and/or trepidation the arrest of Lyndon Jones may have caused his family, friends and himself.”
