Coaches summoned before disciplinary committee
Local junior welterweight boxing champion, Iwan Azore and contender Troy Lewis, the two boxers that were involved in a one minute brawl after the conclusion of their catchweight bout at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Saturday evening last, were each fined a percentage of their purses after the disciplinary committee of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) found them guilty of committing acts meant to bring the sport into disrepute.
Azore was fined fifty percent of his purse while Lewis was slapped with a 20 percent fine.
Both boxers were also suspended from all GBBC activities for 4 weeks.
President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool said that his executives reviewed the tape and found that Azore threw the first blow. “The tape clearly showed that it was Azore who butted Lewis who merely retaliated,” reported Mr. Abdool. He said that while Lewis was not the aggressor, he should have demonstrated a little restraint and subsequently lodged a complaint with the authorities. “We took this into consideration but we could not let Lewis entirely off the hook,” Mr. Abdool said.
For their part, both boxers expressed remorse and promised not to repeat such behaviour.
They subsequently apologized to each other and further to the public, some of whom witnessed the sordid development live on National Communication Network (NCN). “It is not our intention to deprive boxers of their purses but if we allow such behaviour to go unpunished we could very well set a precedent that would be difficult to contain in the future,” said Mr. Abdool.
Meanwhile, Carl Franklyn and Sebert Blake, the coaches in charge of Lewis and Azore, respectively may also face sanctions after GBBC executives decided that they should have been in enough control of their charges to prevent the confrontation.
“We will invite both parties to a hearing since in our view they both failed to control the behaviour of their charges,” Mr. Abdool exhorted. This hearing is scheduled for sometime this week.
Azore and Lewis were involved in a brawl after the conclusion of their catchweight bout on the fifth edition of the ProAm boxing card, Friday evening last. Both boxers were minutes earlier engaged in a brawl that the judges scored evenly thus declaring the fight a draw.
The fight erupted after the judges’ decision was announced and both boxers started taunting each other.
