– Dey, Lopes score victories
Guyana’s tennis players had reason to feel better after securing individual wins in both the Girls and Boys categories in the playoffs for the final team rankings, at the ITF World Junior Tennis Championships (WJTC) which is being played in Trinidad and Tobago.
In general, the performance of both teams improved throughout the competition, but not enough to save them from being placed among the lowest ranked teams.
The boys are now playing for spaces in the bottom two against Grenada and the girls, the bottom three against Trinidad and Aruba.
In earlier team match-ups in the Boys category, the Guyanese put up a tough fight against Honduras, but wasn’t able to clinch any of the three matches.
Honduras won with Andres Argenal defeating Daniel Lopes 6-4, 6-4, Rodrigo Duron then drubbed Gavin Lewis 6-1, 6-0 and then the pair of Andres Argenal/Jose Ezequiel Cruz beat Gavin Lewis/Daniel Lopes 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a thrilling three setter.
Daniel Lopes later earned his first win in the tournament when the team played against Antigua & Barbuda.
He defeated Jevannie Ambrose 6-3,1-6,6-2 in a three setter where he showed great resilience, but his team-mate Lewis went down to one of the top five Caribbean ranked player Shakir Elvin 6-0, 6-1.
The Ambrose/Elvin pair then defeated Lopes/Lewis 6-2, 6-3.
The Guyanese Girls were tough to beat against Panama with Aretta Dey winning her first international match by defeating Daniela Diez 6-0, 6-3.
Against Maria Peralta, Nicola Ramdyhan looked very good and even earned herself a second set win to send the score to set all, but Peralta won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The Diez/Peralta pair then defeated Ramdyhan/Dey 6-1, 7-6(4).
Against Aruba, it was all straight set losses with Amadee Lee def. Aretta Dey 6-1, 6-1, Lotte Van Reek def. Nicola Ramdyhan 6-0, 6-4 in the singles and Ashley Vander Zee/Lotte VanReek def. Aretta Dey/Nicola Ramdyhan 6-1, 6-0.
The final matches were scheduled to be played yesterday, while the team was expected to return today.
THEM PIMPING OUT GUYANA.
