A new project that aims to support the government’s efforts to avoid deforestation and benefit financially from its standing forests is being undertaken by Conservation International and the Guyana Forestry Commission.
The US$627,000 agreement to this effect was signed yesterday at Duke Lodge, Kingston, Georgetown. The funding for the project was provided by the German development bank, KfW.
The project, titled “Avoided Deforestation through Consolidation and Creation of Protected Areas and Carbon Financing Mechanisms in the Guianan Region” covers Guyana, Suriname and Brazil.
The project will last for two years. The key areas targeted under project are closely aligned into the priority areas that are being undertaken by the government. These include forest cover assessment and mapping, biomass/carbon estimation and monitoring, and examination of market based mechanisms suitable for Guyana, as well as enabling engagement of regional partners like Suriname and Brazil.
The work under the project will advance the work outlined in the Low Carbon Development Strategy in creating the framework for allowing performance based incentives to be measured.
Of recent, Guyana’s efforts directed toward the development of a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification System for forest carbon stock have advanced to full development of system design and the commencement of efforts to implement key activities. As part of this process, given the approach of building local capacity to undertake this work locally in the future, a Capacity Building Plan incorporated in a larger Road Map was developed, following a consultative process.
Over the course of implementation of the activities outlined under this KfW project, there will be continued interaction with international stakeholders with an aim to allow for compliance with international guidelines.
