Ladies declared joint winners with Hikers
By Rawle Welch
Indoor champions GCC took their dominance of local hockey to the outdoors when they captured the Men’s title and were declared joint winners with Hikers in the Ladies segment, when the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) in collaboration with Digicel and Bounty Farm staged a historic one-day competition yesterday, at the National Stadium.
Playing for the first time at the venue, GCC Men swept all before them in one of the efficient displays seen in local hockey for sometime.
They ended with two wins and a draw to relegate into second place Hikers, who finished with two victories and a loss, while Old Fort and Dragons closed in that order.
GCC opened up with a nil-all draw against Old Fort, but recovered to beat the dangerous Hikers 3-1 with Alan Fernandes, Devin Hooper and Kevin Spencer, being the players on target, while Shane Samuels made the lone response for Hikers.
In their final appearance, GCC hammered Western Dragons 6-0 through a brace from D. Hopper, while Trevon Smith, Raphael deGroot, Damon Woodroffe and Orland Semple completed the tally.
In results of the other Men’s matches: Hikers beat Dragons 6-1 with Jerazeno Bell and Robert France netting a pair each, while Alex Gouveia and Shaquille Assanah scored one apiece. Jermaine Murray made the lone response for Dragons.
They returned later to crush Old Fort 7-0 with Randy Hope and Akem Thompson each pouring in a double, while A. Gouveia, J. Bell and Devin Munroe each added one.
Old Fort then trounced Dragons 6-0 through a four-goal effort from Aderemi Simon, while Jason DeSantos and John Abrahams contributed one each.
In the Ladies category, the Flora GCC Tigers versus Hikers encounter ended in a tame draw. Kerensa Fernandes netted for the Tigers, while Cora Towler did the same for Hikers.
Tigers then edged GCC Spartans 1-0 with Gabriella Xavier, the lone scorer in the game, while in the final clash of the day, Hikers scraped past Spartans 1-0 with C. Towler again on the score sheet.
Meanwhile, President of the GHB offering brief comments after the day’s activities said the event was a resounding success despite the persistent rain, adding that the drainage on the ground was indeed excellent.
He also thanked the Management and Staff of the Stadium for granting the Board permission to use the facility.
Business Development Manager of sponsor Digicel Gavin Hope presented the winning trophies and prizes to the respective winners.
